This takes place before you meet Ellie in The Last of Us and after the comic series The Last of Us: American Dreams.
If you've beaten the game, you pretty much know what happens at the end of this, but knowing how the games story played out (constant cliches that end up surprising you and proving your foresight wrong) this should still be worth it.
